Reading Notes: Twenty-Two Goblins Part E

 Seventeenth Goblin

  • In the beginning of this story the king is confused why the magic goblin keeps playing with him because there are so many goblins on the sissoo tree for him to choose from
  • Read my Reading Notes Part A for the introduction to this series
  • Starting the actual seventeenth goblin story: there is a King named Moonshine
  • Counsellor named Heaven-lord with a son Moon-lord
  • The son went gambling
  • He lost everything he owned- even his clothes
  • Offered money that he didn't have so he got beat up by the other gamblers
  • He pretended to be dead and lied there for 2 days
  • The gambling-master told the gamblers that beat him to get rid of him and he will pay them what Moon-lord owed
  • They found a well to put him in but one of the gamblers said that he was already dead so what would be the point in putting him into the well
  • Once they left he got up and walked in the desert to Shiva
  • A hermit found him naked and hungry and asked his story
  • He offered Moon-lord food and the hermit said he was a magician and would make a spell for him that would make all of his wishes come true
  • A palace rose in front of him and there were many women there too
  • They bathed him and he ate great food
  • He saw a woman of true beauty and when he woke up everything was gone- the palace, the woman, and the food
  • The hermit insisted that he would get the happiness at night and he did
  • Moon-lord asked him what the spell was so that he could do it too
  • The hermit basically told him that it's not that easy and you have to go through a lot to be able to have the powers to do the spell
  • Moon-lord said he can do anything and the hermit said he would teach him
  • However, the power only comes to a good pupil and if the teacher teaches a bad pupil then both of their powers will go away
  • After doing all of his trials his last one was to walk through the fire to receive his magical powers
  • He hesitated and thought about his family as they were begging him not to go in
  • He decided to and the fire was cold and he saw his teacher
  • They realized that he was a bad pupil and they walked home together with no powers between either of them
