The Cunning Crane and the Crab by W.H.C Rouse
Plot:
Many fish live in a pool of hot water that had dried up so much in the summer there was barely enough to cover them all. A crane saw the opportunity to trick the fish into thinking he was helping them, but really he was there to eat them. He tricks all of them successfully and sees a crab and gets a little too arrogant and thinks he can do the same to the crab. The crab outsmarts him though and kills him for trying to trick him too.
Character Chart:
The Crane:
Cunning, arrogant, and too cocky which lead to his death
The Fish:
Hopeful, naive, too trusting.
The Crab:
Smart, careful, two-steps ahead.
Overall:
The story is the perfect example of karma or "what goes around comes around". It also shows that sometimes when you get too greedy, you make mistakes.
